Part 2: Living on High Alert
Life with Mast Cell Disease is like living in a world full of invisible landmines. At any moment, something as ordinary as a fragrance, food, or even the change of seasons can set off a chain reaction inside my body.Anything a person does in their everyday life could set my body into a whirlwind of cascading symptoms. Some life threatning.
I’ve learned to carry emergency medication everywhere I go. My bag isn’t just a purse, it’s a survival kit. Antihistamines, stabilizers, and epinephrine are my constant companions. And while most people think about weekend plans or dinner menus, I’m calculating risk: Is that room fragrance-free? Will this food trigger me today?
It can feel isolating. Friends and family may not understand why I cancel plans last-minute or avoid certain places altogether. But that’s the reality of living with a body whose alarm system never knows when to stay quiet. I often have to change plans because I no longer have the energy to continue, I need to rest instead.
