September 2025 brought a frightening twist. During an infusion, the nurse ran fluids too quickly. After years of receiving hydration, I experienced for the first time, fluid overload. My ankles swelled, my chest tightened, and a watery cough overtook me.

I had begged them not to schedule morning appointments, reminding them repeatedly that I drank several bottles of water equaling a liter early in the day. My system couldn’t handle IV fluids on top of that. Yet they disregarded me. When I protested, I was told if I refused the appointment offered, I would be skipped until the next scheduled visit.

Reluctantly, I agreed. But halfway through, I had to stop. My body felt strange, heavy, something was wrong. Soon after, I feared I was either having a heart attack or suffering severe electrolyte imbalance. My caregiver rushed me to the ER. What should have been a quick visit turned into a few days hospital admission.

Diagnosis: fluid overload.
